FOR GROWN-UPS & LITTLE LISTENERS

5 Ways to Make Read-Aloud Time More Interactive

You don’t need props or a long activity plan to invite your child into a story. Try one of these ideas the next time you read together.

1. Let them choose the book

Offer two books and let your child point to the one they want. A small choice can become your opening ritual: “Trucks today, or Christmas?” If they pick yesterday’s book again, you can enjoy it again.

2. Pause for a picture

Before turning a page, leave a moment to look. Try a simple observation—“I see a big wheel!”—and see what your child notices. You don’t have to ask a question on every page or make them name everything in the scene.

3. Add a sound or a gesture

Invite a quiet engine rumble for a truck or pretend to pull on winter mittens. Keep it easy to join in. Your child can make the sound, copy the movement, or just watch you do it.

4. Offer a real story choice

Some picture books let children choose what happens next. In Christmas Morning, the friends can put the star on top of the tree or hang candy canes. Read both options, let your child choose, and follow the printed page direction.

For a first read, our guide to interactive picture books walks through the process. With a traditional picture book, you can instead invite a prediction—“What do you think happens next?”—before reading on.

5. Bring one moment into your day

After reading, ask which part they would like to pretend. A toy vehicle can become a truck-show spectator’s favorite. A drawing can become a decoration. Keep any follow-up optional; reading together is already the activity.

Follow your little listener’s pace

Choose one idea instead of trying all five at once. Leave space for quiet listening, too. If a question interrupts a favorite part, save it for later. The goal is an enjoyable moment together.

Stories with choices built in

Ethan & Chloe’s Adventures combines illustrated stories with two-option choices for ages 2–6. Meet the twins and their friends in The Monster Truck Show or Christmas Morning.
